Mobile Plugin - a new open-source extension that optimizes Joomla! for mobile. Easy 3-step installation. Offers flexible configuration to maximize the browsing experience on small displays.
Great news! Mobile web browsing just got a whole lot smoother. With the release of Mobile Plugin for Joomla! the popular open-source CMS platform is now super mobile-compatible.
An open-source initiative out of Helsinki's Metropolia University, led by Tino Magi, engineered the plug-in to optimize how Joomla! sites display and navigate on mobile devices. The plug-in, which installs easily in three simple steps, automatically resizes and positions content for a very clean read. With a couple more simple steps, you can also configure the plug-in to suit the specific capacities of your device. The result when you do this is more than a clean read, it's browsing like the web was made for mobile.
Currently you have options to select what content gets left out if your device can't display everything (tables, iframes, applets, video, etc), or which of these get replaced by links so you can still access the content without overloading the browser. In a second version, (v.091), the developers added Legacy support and automatic update checks. And in future versions they are planning to improve video compatibility, and extend it to Flash videos and Google and Yahoo maps, in addition to other features. Also a range of templates will be available to enhance the style possibilities of supported websites.
The developers behind this project had support from Forum Nokia, whose mission is to connnect developers to tools, technical information, support, and distribution channels they can use to build and market applications around the globe. And hopefully now that the plug-ins are out, they will be taken up by the open-source community and evolved further. The era of full mobile browsability is just beginning, and these new Mobile Plugins make a big step in that direction.
